I thought it was about time to update this site and more importantly to shine a little light on why I started the Midmajorhoops.net site.
I am the Assistant Dean for Information Systems at Hofstra Law School in New York and have been at Hofstra as a student or administrator for over 24 years. So that gives you a little insight on my CAA background (and yes, I got to watch a lot of Speedy Claxton's games). I have been a season ticket holder for several seasons now (and a Pride Club member for the past couple of years). My background in IT helps when writing the blog, and I will be updating the site in the next few weeks with some new things.
More importantly, I've been married for nearly 12 years to my wonderful wife Michelle (who you may see references to as Chelle). I have two wonderful sons, Matthew who is now 2 1/2 (and often referred to as Matt) and my youngest son, Jonathan who is 3 months old. Matthew has become a big basketball fan and often you will see him with me at Hofstra home games and at the Iona Lady Gaels games.
Why did I start writing a college basketball blog? Well it started late in 2005. I have several friends who know my love of college basketball and thought I was knowledgable about the entire CAA, not just Hofstra. So I decided, why not write about college basketball.
At first, it was about the CAA, because that was what I really knew. I was fortunate to have started the blog right as the CAA exploded onto the scene in 2005-06 with Mason's amazing run to the Final Four, as well as UNC Wilmington's great year, Hofstra's fine season (and whose snub from the NCAA I will never get over and their vindication in the NIT proves that they were incorrectly left out) and even the fine underrated season of Old Dominion.
I have expanded that over the past 18 months or so to include a great deal of mid major college basketball. I try to watch as much mid major hoops as ESPNU and ESPN Full Court will let me (and I am known to buy an online streaming video of a game time to time) and I have devoted a good several days each of the past three years on the Bracket Busters.
I have been privileged to witness so many great games during this time and even seen more great games on TV. It has expanded my knowledge, made me more aware of the little things, the nuances in basketball and appreciate the writings of others such as Kyle Whelliston and Michael Glitos, who columns are so fun to read and who are such inspirations to me (and whose links to my site I so greatly greatly appreciate).
My eventual goal in all this is to become a full time college basketball beat writer and down the line, a sports writer. I have to start promoting my site more and start making inroads with the local publications in print and online around NY and around the country.
If you like my writing, feel free to send me an e-mail at [email protected]. I am always willing to listen to constructive criticism, compliments and yeah, you can even comment on why such a beautiful woman such as my wife wants to hang out with me. :-)
Thanks and I hope you enjoy Midmajorhoops.net as much as I enjoy writing for it.
Respectfully,
Gary Moore
