It looks like that the top four slots in the CAA have been decided, barring a major miracle. Fifth place George Mason at 7-6 in the CAA is two games in back of fourth place 9-4 Drexel . The lead is actually three for the Dragons, as they have the tiebreaker on the Patriots, winning their only matchup of the season 61-47 at Drexel. The Patriots are three games back of third place 10-3 Old Dominion, who also has the tiebreaker on George Mason, winning both games of the series, the latest a 66-56 overtime loss at Fairfax. In both games this season, the Patriots had leads for most of the game, only to see ODU comeback and win both. George Mason has a one game lead on sixth place Towson, but in this case its the Patriots that have the tiebreaker, a 73-44 drubbing of the Tigers on the Tigers home court.
As for the top four seeds, first place VCU at 12-1 has the easiest schedule left. The Rams have the Patriots at home, then their toughest game left at ODU, then at UNC Wilmington. The Rams then finish up with JMU at home, then on the road for Georgia State. The Rams also have a home bracket buster game against Bradley.
Second place Hofstra at 11-2 has the toughest schedule left. They are home to Drexel on Thursday, then go to George Mason for an ESPN2 game on Saturday, then at ODU next week. They end up with UNC Wilmington at home, then travel to JMU. The Pride also have Holy Cross at home in an ESPN bracket buster game.
Third place ODU is at Georgia State, then two tough home games vs VCU and Hofstra, then travel to Towson, then finish up at William and Mary. They go to Toledo for a bracket buster game as well.
The Monarchs have the tiebreaker on fourth place Drexel, having won both games of the season against the Dragons.
Fourth place Drexel goes to Hofstra on Thursday, then home to Delaware, then at William and Mary, then home to William and Mary, then at Towson to finish the season. They also have a road bracket buster game vs. Creighton.
If the season ended today in the CAA, the following would happen
First Round Byes - VCU, Hofstra, ODU, Drexel
First Round Matchups
(5) George Mason vs. (12) Delaware
(6) Towson vs. (11) UNC Wilmington
(7) William & Mary vs. (10) Georgia State
(8) Northeastern vs. (9) James Madison
With five games to go, there are likely to be changes to this, but as I said, it looks like the top four teams are set. The only question is the seeding of the top four teams.
