Its the first day of fall. Summer is over...thank god. Not one of my better ones, I'll say that. Everything else is fine though. My son is 14 months and sleeping in his play pen right now as I type this. I wish I could tell you why I didn't post any articles online since May, but I think its best left unsaid and in the past.
I was hoping my first posting would not start with sad news, but alas the happenings of last weekend on the campus of Duquesne start my first article of the season off, specially since my last posting in May concerned one of the new members of the Duquesne team, Shawn James. James and four other members of the Duquesne basketball team, Sam Ashaolu, Stuard Baldonado, Aaron Jackson, and Kojo Mensah were shot and some seriously injured at a campus party last weekend. Ashalou was the most seriously injured and has now been upgraded from critical to serious condition. Baldonado was released yesterday and faces several months of rehabilitation due to being shot in the back and arm. James was shot in the foot but since he is sitting out the season as a result of transferring from Northeastern, he should be fine. Mensah and Jackson as well. Ashaolu may never play basketball again. He is fortunate to be alive.
Once again, an incident results from a major university campus party. First it was the Duke lacrosse party, now this incident at Duquesne where a female student let six male non Duquesne students several of whom she knew were armed into a Black Student Union Dance on campus. She has been correctly charged with reckless endangerment and hopefully faces jail time as a result. University campus officials now must relook at their security policies so that incidents like this won't happen again.
The NCAA season is a little more than a month away with games starting in early November. With that in mind, over the next few weeks, I'll be looking at previews of various conferences, specifically of course, the CAA, my featured conference. There has been major turnover in the CAA, both in players and coaches, so it looks to be a very interesting transition year for one of this past season's most compelling conferences. Stay tuned.
