There are two games of significant importance tonight in the CAA. In Hempstead, George Mason, first in the conference and ranked #25 in the coaches poll, takes on third place Hofstra, who has the third longest home streak in the nation. If George Mason wins, the Patriots clinch the #1 seed in the CAA tournament. If Hofstra wins, they clinch a bye in the CAA tournament with an outside chance of finishing second in the conference depending on how UNC Wilmington finishes out the season.
Speaking of UNC Wilmington, the 2nd place Seahawks travel to the Siegel Center to face VCU, who is tied for fifth in the CAA. The Seahawks with a win and a George Mason loss to Hofstra will move into a tie for first place in the CAA. If that should happen and they remained tied for first after the regular season ends, UNC Wilmington would be the #1 seed due to a better record against Hofstra. If the Seahawks and Patriots both win tonight, the Seahawks clinch 2nd place in the CAA with Mason finishing first (if they tied in that scenario, Mason finishes first due to a better record against Hofstra).
VCU needs a win to keep their slim first round bye hopes alive. VCU must win out its last two games and hope that Northeastern loses one of its remaining two games, plus either Hofstra must lose its last two games or Old Dominion loses one of its remaining two games.
After tonight, the CAA tournament seeding picture may become much clearer or become much more murkier depending on these two games. Stay tuned.
