Hofstra couldn't stop Gary Neal, however Towson couldn't stop Loren Stokes and Stokes had more help as Hofstra defeated Towson 82-70 tonight in Hempstead. Neal had 36 points to lead all scorers. Loren Stokes led Hofstra with 30 points and 10 rebounds. Carlos Rivera had 19, Auremias Kieza had 12 and Antoine Agudio added 11 for Hofstra. Lawrence Hamm added 15 points and 11 rebounds for Towson. Hofstra improves to 13-4 and 6-3 in conference. Towson is now 9-10 and 5-5 in conference.
In other CAA action, the other big game of the night saw Old Dominion (15-5 overall, 8-2 in conference) erase a five point halftime deficit, outscoring Drexel 47-35 in the second half and defeating the Dragons 74-67. Drexel falls to 12-9 overall, 6-4 in conference.
Northeastern used a 13-0 run in the first half and never trailed the rest of the way enroute to a 68-54 road win over Georgia State. Jose Juan Barea led the Huskies with 15 points while Shawn James added 12 points and 15 rebounds. Northeastern is now 11-7 and 7-3 in conference. Georgia State falls to 4-13 overall, 2-8 in conference.
UNC Wilmington embarrased James Madison on the Dukes' own court 83-46. John Goldsberry scored all 18 of his points in the first half as the Seahawks led by 19 at the half. UNC Wilmington was 10 of 16 from 3 point range and shot 50 percent from the field. UNC Wilmington is 8-2 in conference and 15-6 overall. James Madison is 0-9 in CAA play, 3-14 overall.
Jai Lewis had 22 points and 11 rebounds as George Mason shot 66 percent from the field, including 9 of 18 from the three point arc as the Patriots downed William and Mary 81-58. The Tribe cut the lead to 44-42 early in the second half but the Patriots outscored the Tribe 37-16 the rest of the way. George Mason joined Old Dominion and UNC Wilmington atop the standings in the CAA with an 8-2 conference record and 14-5 overall.
Finally, Virginia Commonwealth rallied from a five point halftime deficit and survived a scare from Delaware on the road, winning 56-52. VCU is 6-3 in conference and 12-5 overall.
In CAA action on Saturday, there are three big games on tap. At 2:00 PM, Old Dominion is at George Mason. At 4:00 PM, Hofstra is at Drexel. At 7:00 PM, Northeastern is at UNC Wilmington. In other games, Virginia Commonwealth is at Georgia State, Towson is at Delaware and in the battle of "Escape the CAA Cellar", winless James Madison is at winless William and Mary. Give the edge to the Tribe at home.
